School Lunch Program

A good lunch is a combination of foods that supply approximately 1/3 of the vitamins, minerals, protein, carbohydrates, and fat needed daily by the body. Students are encouraged to choose 5 for better health! Remember participating in the National School Lunch Program provides kids with the "fuel" they need to perform for the afternoon.

Today's school meals provide much more variety than before and follow the U.S. Dietary Guidelines. The National School Lunch Program provides students with the opportunity of selecting a minimum of 3 of the 5 offered food choices for their lunch meal. The idea of "3 is good, 4 is better, 5 is best" is promoted to assure greater variety and nutrient intake.

School Meals Are A Prerequisite for Learning

Nutrition is among the many factors that shape the lives of children. Part of the mission of the Food Services Department is "to provide nutritious, appetizing foods that will contribute to the growth and good health of children." Regulated by the National School Lunch Act, students are permitted the opportunity of selecting 3 of the 5 offered components of the meal. The idea of "3 is good, 4 is better, 5 is best" is promoted to assure greater variety and nutrient intake. Menu items are based on student responses to food preference surveys and actual student involvement with taste-testing. Alternates are offered throughout the meal periods to provide choices.
