ESCAMBIA COUNTY, FLORIDA
The School Board of Escambia County, Florida, convened for the Public Forum at 6:04 p.m. in Room 160, Hall Center, 30 East Texar Drive, Pensacola, Florida, with the following present:
Chairman: Dr. Hal Mason Vice Chairman: Mrs. Cary Stidham
Members: Dr. John DeWitt
Dr. Elmer Jenkins
Superintendent of Schools: Mr. Jim May
Dr. Mason called the Public Forum to order at 6:04 p.m. Mrs. Vanette Webb, School Board Member, District 5, was not in attendance. Mr. Edward Fleming, interim Board Attorney, joined the meeting in progress at 7:15 p.m.
Mr. May announced that the meeting tonight would provide a trial run for televising Board meetings, and he introduced Ms. Melanie Gambil, Instructional Video Specialist, as well as Miss Nacia Ezelle and Miss Sharmir Gadsen, juniors at Tate High School, who will be operating the television cameras at each Regular Board meeting.
The Board recognized the following speakers:
Dr. Mason called for Mr. Harry Evans to come forward, and Mr. Evans advised that he wished to speak to two items, but would hold his comments until the Board addressed Purchasing items on the agenda.
1) Ms. Nancy Virgilio, 8644 Westview Lane, Pensacola, Florida, 32514, discussed concerns regarding family issues of implementing year-round school, particularly scheduling child care, summer camps, and recreational activities.
2) Mr. V. J. Clark inquired concerning out-of-state students and was advised that there are less than 70 out-of-state students (county-wide) who are attending public schools in Escambia County.
3) Mr. Robert Kents, 836 South "K" Street, Pensacola, Florida, stated that he wished to express displeasure regarding actions that had been taken primarily toward Mrs. Webb. Dr. Mason commented that Florida law reads that the Governor can remove or suspend a Board Member and only the Governor can appoint another Board Member. Dr. Mason noted that individuals could write, call, or E-Mail the Governor to voice their concerns.
4) Mr. Tanner McKenzie, student in the International Baccalaureate Program, spoke in favor of student representation on the School Board.
5) Miss Rebecca Rudicell, student in the International Baccalaureate Program, spoke concerning designation of a student committee to represent the voice of the students on the School Board. Mr. May stated that he had asked each principal to submit several names, and he advised that the students could confer with their principal in that regard.
6) Ms. Jenny Dyess, President, Escambia County Council of PTAs, introduced Ms. Diana Case, Bellview Elementary Librarian, who reported that in keeping with technology goals, the PTA had given over $11,000 to wire the school for Internet for Accelerated Reader, STAR Program, and ClarisWorks.
